  • Science | All Saints Catholic College

Educatio “Equipped with his five senses, man explores the universe around him and calls the adventure Science.” Edwin Powell Hubble, The Nature of Science Mission Statement The mission of the Science department is to provide a foundation in the elements of scientific method, theory and applicability that will encourage students to acquire an in-depth appreciation of Science. Students are introduced to many key scientific skills in the first few weeks at All Saints Catholic College, which provide a basis for their learning over the subsequent years. Most students will study for the AQA Combined Science: Trilogy award through which they will gain two Science GCSEs. There is also the option to study the Separate Sciences which provide the perfect learning platform for taking Science beyond secondary school. At the end of their scientific education in All Saints Catholic College, each student will be able to: apply scientific method and critical thinking skills to raise questions and define and solve problems; evaluate the quality of scientific information and its interpretation; clearly express scientific ideas using oral, visual and written communication; understand the ethical dimensions and role of science in human experience; acquire the technical and interpersonal skills to be leaders who contribute to an ever-changing society. Literacy Statement The Science Department provides opportunities to enhance the writing, reading and oral skills of students through lessons and assessments. Students who are scientifically literate understand: the structure of scientific investigations and report writing; the skills needed to ask, find, or determine answers to questions derived from curiosity about their world; the skills needed to describe, explain, and predict natural phenomena; how to respond to exam questions (4 or 5 mark questions); how to use scientific key words; how to use concept mapping; how to explore different text types within the scientific genre (textbooks, newspapers and magazine articles); the importance of highlighting key words/ideas; how to pose and evaluate arguments based on evidence and apply conclusions from such arguments appropriately; how to express opinions that are scientifically and technologically informed. Click below to view our Science curriculum for each year group. Year 7 Year 8 Year 9 Year 10 Year 11 Combined Science Year 11 Triple Science If you would like to find out more about the Science curriculum, contact our Head of Science Miss Dower by emailing l.dower@allsaintscc.org.uk Science "All the science of the Saints is included in these two things: To do, and to suffer. • Educatio | All Saints Catholic College

Educatio Discover At All Saints we will endeavour to provide a high quality education for all students, especially for those who are poor and disadvantaged. The theology for education at All Saints stems from John 10:10, "I have come so that you may have life, life in all its fullness". With this in mind, we aim to provide an educational setting that provides a "fullness" in life for our students, which readily equips them for life beyond school, and a passion for life-long learning. Within the Gospel we constantly find examples of Jesus as the 'teacher', interpreting scriptures as well as providing clear guidance on day-to-day morality and also social justice (see Formatio and Iustitia Socialis). The book of Proverbs advocates the necessity of a strong education: "It is better - much better - to have wisdom and knowledge than gold and silver". Thro28 ugh hard work (Laborare) and support from teachers and parents we will endeavour to provide a strong education for all students in our care. Teachers at All Saints work in the service (Servire) of the students within their care. Taking the example of Jesus in Mark 10, "For even the Son of Man did not come to be served; he came to serve and to give his life to redeem many people”, we recognise the importance of this passage in putting the needs of our own students first. Teachers at All Saints are characterised by having a steadfast service to the students in their care, going above and beyond the call of duty in order to serve. Our curriculum timings for each year group can be viewed here .
