Black History Month 2025

Our theme this year is Reclaiming Narratives – Proud to Be

This October, we celebrate Black History Month by recognising the contributions, stories, and achievements of Black people in Britain and around the world. The national theme, "Reclaiming Narratives," focuses on correcting and highlighting histories that have been ignored or untold.

Throughout Black History Month, the whole school will engage in a variety of activities including lessons, form time sessions (PSHE and Newsflash), assemblies, and special events. Students are encouraged to participate in competitions such as poster and poetry contests, spoken word, art, and even cooking. All staff, especially form tutors and teachers, are asked to actively engage with weekly slides, resources, and classroom discussions to support these initiatives. Additionally, there will be a focus on library books and displays, featuring titles like Black and British by David Olusoga (non-fiction), and fiction books including The Hate U Give, Buffalo Soldier, Crongton Knights, The Crossover, and How High the Moon.

It’s important to remember that Black History is taught year-round as an essential part of British History, not just during October. Most importantly, student voices will be central, with opportunities for them to share their thoughts, creativity, and ideas on what it means to be “Proud to Be.”
