Y8 visit Imperial College London

Year 8 students recently took part in the exciting Proto-Maker Challenge, an innovative programme designed to develop creativity, problem-solving and design skills through real-world invention.

Working in teams, students were challenged to develop solutions to some of the world's most pressing issues, including environmental sustainability, life underwater, fast fashion and equality. Over a series of workshops at the Makerspace and in school, students followed the full design process: researching problems, generating ideas, designing prototypes and presenting their final inventions.

Students learned about design thinking, 3D printing, laser cutting, modelling, prototyping and project management, while also developing valuable teamwork, communication and presentation skills.

The programme introduced students to a range of STEAM careers and gave them the opportunity to work alongside Imperial College London undergraduate students, professional designers and industry experts. Students also experienced the cutting-edge Makerspace environment, where innovation and creativity come together.

The challenge culminated in students pitching their inventions to their peers, with the winning team progressing to compete in the grand finale. As well as certificates, prizes and goody bags, the competition offers the exciting possibility of winning a 3D printer for the school.

The Proto-Maker Challenge was a fantastic opportunity for students to think creatively, develop practical skills and experience what it is like to become a real inventor. We are incredibly proud of their enthusiasm, innovation and teamwork throughout the programme.
